Katatura – »der Ort, an dem wir nicht leben wollen« – so heißt das Township vor den Toren der Namibischen Hauptstadt Windhoek übersetzt aus der Sprache der Herero, das in den 1950er Jahren nach dem Vorbild der südafrikanischen Apartheidpolitik durch Zwangsumsiedlung entstanden ist. Ein Künstlerbuch wurde fertiggestellt, das afrikanische Kontraste aufzeigt: Banknoten aus Namibia / Südafrika avancieren zum Kunstwerk, bildgebende Elemente werden subtrahiert, senkrechte Linien assoziieren Gefangenschaft in finanziellen Verhältnissen. Eingearbeitet werden collageartig Informationen, Fundstücke und Bilder aus einem Afrika-Aufenthalt in Anlehnung an die Recyclingkultur sowie die aus Flickwerk bestehenden Wellblechhütten der Townships Namibias und Südafrikas, die trotz Armut eine ganz eigene Ästhetik und Lebensenergie ausstrahlen.
Katatura – »the place where we do not want to live« – that is the name of the township at the gates of the Namibian capital Windhoek, translated from the language of the Herero. It developed by forced relocation in the 1950s on the model of South Africa’s apartheid policy. An artist book was created that shows african contrasts. Banknotes from Namibia / South Africa are raised to art works, shape-giving components are eliminated, and vertical lines evoke associations with imprisonment in financial conditions. Incorporated in this artist book are collage-like information, found objects, and images from a stay in Africa, all arranged to recall the patchwork of corrugated iron huts of townships in Namibia and South Africa, which exude a unique aesthetic and life energy, despite poverty.
